Proj–From Drawing Boxes to Drawing Buidlings

This was the first project I completed in the Drawing for Design class. Thank God for classes like this, since i never took any classes in high school. This first project consisted of understanding how to draw geometric structures as we practiced drawing squares, triangles, and cylinders. Also focused on the either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd point perspective as our task was to pick and draw a building.

Sidebar: As I work to clean up my drawing skills the bigger problem was drawing outside in the cold (this was around October) and still trying to make nice pretty drawings.


Sketches was about getting the form and drawing what was in front of you even if it was rough and somewhat messy.




I decided to sketch the Living Arts Centre cause of its interesting geometric structure plus there was enough space to sit and draw good angles of the building lol.





Oh yea this was the place from my previous post where I took those pictures. The other one inside with the clouds was from City Hall.






It took 2 days of sketching since we had to have at least 20 different sketches of the building



After we had to choose 3 different sketches and combine them together to create a composition.



What was difficult about it is that it still had to have a perspective (with shadows) and a point of interest.




Once we scanned the sketches we had to outline them on Illustrator.



The process with the composition was a lot of repeating but at the same time simplifying and deleting unnecessary parts.


Here's my final layout which is suppose to capture the "essence" of the Living Arts Centre.

Proj–Persuasion

I actually posted some of my process work from a previous post before. My social issue was computer addiction/excessive use of computers which I decided to pick as i do frequently use the computer and it helps since my goal is to convince myself. With my final choice in Can't Turn It Off my intention was to bring awareness to the issue by giving the audience a different POV which they're not use to. I tried working with a lot of contrasts (from left to right) and repetition to echo out my point. My problem with the end result of this project is that i didn't explore enough variations as I already tied myself to this idea with little edits here and there. But I don't know if it stands out or even totally affects you the viewers in someway.


I am pretty happy with the final result I guess if i had more time to fix it up and possibly change the direction of the layout.



lol this was funny, taking pictures 2 in the morning. Have you ever seen how you look when your still online late into the morning?



This was my other option i came up with but i dunno if it had much impact like the final design.



These were also part of my proj as Approach 1 just using typography to present the message.



Imagery with Approach 2 was a lot harder and you can see where i was masking the image (something I have to look into next time when I'm printing).

Proj–Historical Typographer Brochure

This was my first project for Typography 2 where we had to research a typographer and design a biographical brochure for the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library (UofT). Really interesting project since I got to research in depth their work, typefaces, and what they were trying to achieve in their designs. He was known for his font Centaur, which was based on the Jenson font. He was really interested on using traditional typefaces in modern works which really made his work elegant and classy. So that was pretty much my direction in designing the brochure, at the same time we also had to keep the layout conservative so i bound to keeping it clean and presentable.

Inside content, I was only allowed to use 1 colour (even if its black). I chose green since it felt like a natural and traditional colour.


Process work, these are some of the first layouts I came up with.





Other colours I was thinking of using before the final print.


The cover features a part of Roger decorative Ampersand (&). Used it since it had so much flow and had elegance.

Ah-December the time when the days are a lot shorter.


I find it weird that I can't write a paper w/o a computer in front of me.

Fall Semester Review

Starting off with the second year was a struggle and not a lot was gain from it. With the whole workload and the long hours I pretty much crumbled under all of it. I knew I did not reach my full potential in dealing with all the work and pretty much just got by doing whatever i had to without thought and without effort. The cause is on my laziness and procrastination and lack of care. Left a lot of stuff on the back burner and not really satisfied at all.

Now moving into the next semester I just gotta keep on working and improving my skills. I already pressured myself before and I know its going to take time to get better. Getting back to the blog once again I will be posting more on my progress and taking time to put more interest in my work. I'm really trying to restructure on how I go about with my work and I hope to start that now.
